If you want to connect from home, you will need to use the VPN, or a unix login server.

Where to connect to

The guide below connects to an example address, which you will need to substitute with the correct address for your department.

For Computer Science

Course folders

  • From Mac, you’ll connect to smb://webshare.fos.auckland.ac.nz/web/course
  • From Linux/Mac terminal, you’ll connect via ssh  ssh <upi>@login02.fos.auckland.ac.nz, then cd /mnt/<upi>/web/course
  • From Ubuntu, you’ll connect to the Server: webshare.fos.auckland.ac.nz, with Share: web/course

Personal websites

  • From Windows, you’ll connect to \webshare.fos.auckland.ac.nzwebhomepages

  • From Ubuntu, you’ll connect to the Server: webshare.fos.auckland.ac.nz, with Share: web/homepages.stat

For Mathematics

Note, to create a homepage which will be viewable www.math.auckland.ac.nz/~[your upi]:

  1. Create a folder called public_html in your user file directory
  2. Add a file into the folder named index.html – this will be the front page of your website

To connect to your website files and edit them:

  • From Windows, you’ll connect to \webshare.fos.auckland.ac.nzscience-facultymathmaths-nfshome[your upi]public_html
  • From Mac, you’ll connect to smb://webshare.fos.auckland.ac.nz/web/science-faculty/math/maths-nfs/home/[your upi]/public_html
  • From Linux/Mac terminal, you’ll connect via ssh  ssh <upi>@aitken.math.auckland.ac.nz, then cd /home/[your upi]/public_html

For Science-IT

  • From Windows, you’ll connect to \webshare.fos.auckland.ac.nzwebhomepages.sit
  • From Mac, you’ll connect to smb://webshare.fos.auckland.ac.nz/web/homepages.sit
  • From Linux/Mac terminal, you’ll connect via ssh  ssh <upi>@login02.fos.auckland.ac.nz, then cd /mnt/<upi>/web/homepages.sit
  • From Ubuntu, you’ll connect to the Server: webshare.fos.auckland.ac.nz, with Share: web/homepages.sit

Windows

Open Windows Explorer, and type the Address of the file share as shown above.

For example: \webshare.fos.auckland.ac.nzweb

You will see a login window like the one below, unless you have already logged into the UOA domain, in which case you will authenticate automatically.

Untitled2

Enter your University UPI and password and click Connect. Wait while the file share connects, and you will see a list of directories. You can now edit the files in the normal way.

Troubleshooting

Personal firewalls such as ZoneAlarm on Windows may block certain ports that are used by the SMB service. You should ensure that ports 135-139 and 445 are open on both TCP and UDP. Or to accept all connections from webshare.fos.auckland.ac.nz

Connect at login

You can save some time by creating a shortcut on your desktop, so you do not have to enter the URL each time you want to connect:
