Some additional settings that can be used if a user has problems connecting to a Windows smb share from  Mac OS X, this article is aimed at Mac users.

How To

I have recently had a problem connecting to a smb file share on a Windows server from my iMac running OS X 10.8.4 were the user name I wanted to connect with is not my account name. I was getting an error There is a problem connecting to the server “server name”. You do not have permission to access the server.

When connecting with smb://server/share

You can get around this with smb://DOMAIN;username:server/share

For OS X 10.9 Mavericks users you can also try connecting with cifs://server/share

For OS X 10.12 Sierra try cifs://DOAMAIN;username@server/share or smb://DOAMAIN;username@server/share

see this link.
