Summary

This article describes how to install the Cisco AnyConnect client in Windows, Linux and Mac OS X, and is aimed at Users and Science IT staff.

How to

This cross platform client is available for Linux OS X and Windows, it requires Java to run. There are two VPN servers that can be used vpn1.auckland.ac.nz and vpn2.auckland.ac.nz . If connections to vpn1.auckland.ac.nz fail try vpn2.auckland.ac.nz.

Note OS X users running OS X 10.6 or later should use the built in vpn capability see Mac OS X.

Installation and use in Windows

Go to vpn,  login, download the client and run the installer.  Be aware that it tries to auto install a java client.

Restart if necessary,  open the CISCO AnyConnect VPN client add vpn1.auckland.ac.nz as the host to connect to  and click select. change the Group drop down from Contractor  to Staff or Student add your upi and password into the appropriate fields.

Note:

The current version of this client (2.5.6005) does not support Windows 8 without a Registry hack.  Windows 8 is supported  in version 3.0.11042 without anything extra needing to be done. There is a new version of the AnyConnect client here. The client offered by vpn1.auckland.ac.nz  vpn2.auckland.ac.nz is still the old one.

Installation and use in Linux

Go to vpn login and download the client.

run the following commands

Assuming the script is downloaded into Downloads

cd Downloads
chmod 755 vpnsetup.sh
sudo ./vpnsetup.sh

To create a symbolic link on the desktop.

cd ~/Desktop
ln -s /opt/cisco/vpn/bin/vpnui cisco_vpn

Open the CISCO AnyConnect VPN client add vpn1.auckland.ac.nz as the host to connect to  and click select. change the Group drop down from Contractor  to Staff or Student add your upi and password into the appropriate fields. One user had problems connecting to vpn1.auckland.ac.nz but was able to connect with vpn2.auckland.ac.nz .

Installation and use in Mac OS X

It has been noted that over some internet connections the built in client for OSX dosen’t function correctly – in these instances use the CISCO AnyConnect VPN  client on your Mac.  Head to vpn,  login and download the client and run the installer. Note this requires java to be installed.

Restart if necessary,  open the CISCO AnyConnec VPN client which is in the /Applications/Cisco  folder, add vpn1.auckland.ac.nz as the host to connect to  and click select. change the Group drop down from Contractor  to Staff or Student add your upi and password into the appropriate fields.
