OS X 10.11, El Capitan has been released at the end of September and is available but there are issues affecting users relating to hardware and applications.
El Capitan will run on the same hardware the runs OS X 10.6.8 or newer but there are various features that OS X 10.11 have that are unavailable on older hardware such as AirDrop, the specifications for it are here .

OS X 10.11.1

This update has been released and includes an Update to Digital Camera RAW Compatibility version 6.17, iTunes 12.3.1 and Command line tools for Xcode 7.1.

There have been reports of problems with both Office 2016 and Office 2011 on The new OS. Updates for Office 2016 have fixed the problem, Office 2011 installs without problem but needs an update 14.5.6 to fix OS X 10.11 issues the update includes Lync. Lync version 14.2.1 for Mac connects to the University Lync system fro OS X 10.11.

System Integrity Protection

This is a new security feature introduced in OS X 10.11 which locks a whole lot of important directories to prevent unauthorised changes.

If you look at the / directory from terminal with the command ls -lO  you will see a number of directories have a new restricted flag including some of the hidden directories.
so that /System, /bin, /sbin, /usr (except /usr/local), /private/etc, /private/var, and /private/tmp.
It is possible to turn this off or on in terminal with the command csrutil disable or enable and restarting the computer.
There are reports of this causing problems with the Homebrew package system but I was able to install homebrew, fink and  MacPorts without any apparent problems but this may have an  impact on software that is compiled from source by end users and installed into /user but not /usr/local and other places.
Note a sunlnk is a system undeletable flag.

There is an update to version 12.3 after installing OS X 10.11. The version is being updated to iTunes 12.3.1 with the release of OS X 10.11.1.

Version 7.1 of Xcode is installed for OS X 10.11. Xcode is being updated with the release of OS X 10.11.1, but the version number is not changing.

Java is not installed by default in OS X 10.11. There is an Apple Javaforosx.dmg package that installs on OS X 10.11 and is needed for Fink, some versions of Matlab, .

MATLAB R2015b supports OS X 10.11. there may be java issues with  MATLAB R2014a and earlier as well as reported issues with Xcode 7 for MEX.

Matlab 2014a installed and started and ran after the patch for OS X 10.10 Yosemite was installed, this was the most recent Matlab version that I could find the installation license for.

Currently this is reported to not work with OS X 10.11.

TeX normally installs a link in /usr/texbin and /Library/TeX/texbin which points to the binaries but SIP will prevent the /usr/texbin link  for OS X 10.11.

Users will need to reconfigure their TeX gui apps e.g. TeXWorks, TexStudio, TexShop etc. to use the /Library/TeX/texbin link for the binaries.

the terminal prompt changes  to a key when you need to type a password for sudo

 CAPS Printing

The Wireless CAPS printer for OS X 10.10 installs and works in OS X 10.11.

Secure Empty Trash

This option is no longer available in the Finder menu in OS X 10.11, There is a terminal command to securely delete files if you must do this.

The Cisco AnyConnect version 3.1.10010 is working on OS X 10.11. and downloaded from The built in Apple VPN client is also able to connect to the University VPN.

The Install Command Line Tools menu item in the Tools menu does not work in OS X 10.11 El Capitan.

To install the command line tools

  • right click on the Aquamacs application in the Applications folder
  • select Show Package Contents,
  • open the Resources folder
  • run the Aquamacs Command line Took mpkg
  • deselect the usr/bin choices and select the /usr/local/bin choices and run the installer

System Integrity Protection prevents installation in /usr/bin but allows installation in /usr/local/bin which should be in your path.

You can check your path with the command

$ echo $PATH

and now should be able to start aquamacs from the command prompt.
